ALTADENA
About the City:
Altadena, California is a beautiful community that is part of unincorporated Los Angeles County. Approximately 14 miles from downtown Los Angeles, Altadena is located just north of Pasadena and just east of La Canada Flintridge; it is bordered on the north by the Angeles National Forest.
Altadena was developed as a suburb of Los Angeles in 1887. Its unincorporated status allowed it to become a major settlement area for working- and middle-class African-Americans during a period when non-whites were forbidden to live in the vast majority of greater Los Angeles.
With the spectacular San Gabriel Mountains as backdrop, Altadena’s tree-lined neighborhoods and commercial zones comprise one of the oldest and most beautiful communities in the San Gabriel Valley. With very few apartment buildings and hardly any condos, Altadena exudes a homey country feel. The community’s proximity to the mountains makes it perfect for those who enjoy the great outdoors; in fact, many yards open onto mountain trails.
A distinct history, diverse population, and independent identity characterize the town, which shares a border, a school district, and other cultural resources with Pasadena.
History of Altadena:
The history of Altadena can be traced back to its original indigenous peoples. The immigrant families who later moved into the area can also be traced back to their various arrivals in this country. As in Pasadena, the indigenous inhabitants of Altadena were the Hahamog-na, a Tongva Native American tribe that lived in the Arroyo Seco. In 1770 while conducting an exploratory expedition of Alta California, General Portola of the Mexican Army met the Hahamog-na tribal chief. With the establishment of the San Gabriel Mission in 1773 and the City of Los Angeles in 1778, the south lands of California were properties claimed in the name of the King of Spain. Altadena is the northernmost portion of Rancho San Pascual established by the Mexican Government in 1826 after claiming independence from Spain. In 1848, California was annexed in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and later became a state in 1850. The Mexican Ranchos were then opened to settlement from other parts of the country.
In 1880, brothers Capt. Frederick and John Woodbury of Marshalltown, Iowa, purchased 937 acres of the Rancho, which became known as the Woodbury Ranch. John Woodbury established the Pasadena Improvement Company in 1887, a year after Pasadena was incorporated, with a plot plan of residential development referred to as the Woodbury Subdivision. The brothers renamed the community “Altadena”, coined from the Spanish word “alta” meaning “upper” and “dena” from Pasadena.
In the late 19th century, Altadena remained an undeveloped area of Los Angeles County. With its country location, the new community soon attracted well-known public figures from the East.
In 1887, Andrew McNally, the printing magnate from Chicago and his friend Col. G.G. Greene built mansions on what was to become Altadena’s “Millionaire’s Row” – Mariposa Street near Santa Rosa. Among the millionaires who settled in Altadena include newspaper moguls Armiger Scripp and William Kellogg. Wallace Neff, the grandson of Andrew McNally, who was a famous Southern California architect, started his career in Altadena with the design and construction of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church in 1918. The area continued to develop in the early 20th century.
Over the years Pasadena has attempted several times to annex Altadena. However, community campaigns stopped annexation in 1956. Since then Pasadena tried several times to resurrect its attempts of annexation without success.
