Nestled in the foothills of the picturesque San Gabriel Mountains, Glendora is only about 27 miles and an hour’s drive from downtown Los Angeles. The city is located 6 miles northeast of West Covina and about 21 miles north of Anaheim, CA. Its strategic location offers convenient access to major commercial, cultural, educational and recreational areas in Southern California.
Glendora is one of Southern California’s most attractive residential communities with a variety of homes – from cozy turn-of-the-century cottages to prestigious executive hillside estates. The city’s oak- and palm-lined streets are well suited to the temperate, Mediterranean climate.
City officials describe Glendora as “an upscale but understated suburban city”, where neighbors “know and speak to one another” and where “business people work together with the collaborative spirit and zeal of their pioneering ancestors.”
The city believes that in Glendora, everyone is family, and families are most important. The community provides a great place to live, work and play for people who cherish small-town living and traditional American values.
Glendora’s diversified business community ranges from the downtown “Village”, where personalized service is provided by several owner-operated retail stores, to corporate headquarters of major U.S. and international companies, including Rain Bird Sprinkler Manufacturing Company and the National Hot Rod Association. The city is also home to two major hospitals in Southern California, and Citrus Community College, an educational institution recognized as an international leader in art, performance and media education.
Known as the “Pride of the Foothills”, Glendora is the site of the largest growth bougainvillea in the United States.
Glendora’s history dates back to 1837 when Don Ygnacio Palomares, veteran of the war for Mexican independence, received a 15,000-acre land grant from Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado. The land holding was called Rancho San Jose and included the present day cities of Pomona, Claremont, La Verne, San Dimas, and Glendora.
In 1843, easterner Henry Dalton came to the Glendora area in 1843, and capitalizing on the revolutionary troubles that California was embroiled in with Mexico, created a community of ranches, farms, vineyards and tanneries. The 1870s brought many new settlers to the area including some of the future leaders of the city that would be called Glendora: William Cullen, John Bender, Clement La Fetra and his wife Mary.
Modern Glendora was established on April 1, 1887 by retired eastern industrialist George D. Whitcomb who moved to California from Illinois in the early 1880s. Whitcomb, who was the founder of the Whitcomb Locomotive Works in Chicago and Rochelle, Illinois, coined the name “Glendora” by combining this wife’s name (Leodora), with the location of his home in a glen of the San Gabriel Mountains. Whitcomb’s Glendora Land Company was instrumental in helping design much of the future town.
Glendora was incorporated in 1911. With agriculture as the key business, the city remained a small citrus-producing community until the late 1950s, when agriculture gave way to large scale residential development. The city has grown steadily ever since.
Nearly 100 years after its incorporation, Glendora still retains many of the characteristics treasured by its founding fathers.

ROUTE 66 MILE RUN
Residents turn out in high numbers to participate in Glendora’s Route 66 Mile Run, an annual event that celebrates the heritage and spirit of the “Mother Road”.
FLASHBACK TO THE ‘50s.
The largest end-of-summer party in the east San Gabriel Valley is held at Glendora Historic Village on the second Saturday in September.
FARMERS MARKET AND STREET FAIRE
An annual event that opens in May at the “Village” every Thursday from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., where local crafters, fresh produce stands, and area businesses are set up on Glendora Ave. Lots of food, entertainment and activities for the whole family. Farmer’s market closes in September once school starts up again.
