About the City
Called the “Gem City of the Foothills”, Monrovia is located in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The city’s population was 36,929 at the 2000 census.
Incorporated in 1887, Monrovia is the fourth oldest city in Los Angeles County.
Monrovia is well known for its rich architectural history. Among its famous homes is The Oaks, an 1884 Victorian that was once William Monroe’s residence. Another is the Upton Sinclair House, former home of the Pulitzer Prize winning author of “Dragon’s Teeth”, Upton Sinclair. The city’s quaint downtown area, with its unique shops, restaurants, and a movie theater, has been preserved and restored beautifully.
There are two historical preservation groups in Monrovia: the Monrovia Historical Society, which is dedicated to restoring old commercial buildings and landmarks; and the Monrovia Historic Preservation Group, that focuses on the restoration and preservation of pre-1930s homes of historical and architectural significance.
In such a history-conscious town, newer buildings are made to look older. For example the Krikorian Movie Theater on Myrtle Avenue, which opened on November 2000, has a 1930s art deco design, with turrets, stained glass, and a wraparound marquee. The effect is similar to Old Town Pasadena, with shops and restaurants centered around redeveloped classic structures.
The city offers a Monrovia Technology Campus at the heart of one of the largest concentrations of high-tech businesses in the San Gabriel Valley, along with a thriving Old Town dining, entertainment, and shopping district; quiet and protected neighborhoods filled with historic homes, hotels, shopping centers; and new, mixed-use housing developments along major transportation corridors.
Monrovia’s history dates back to the late 1800s when William Monroe, a Los Angeles city councilman, moved to the area with his family in the spring of 1884.
Monroe, a former school teacher and army officer during the Civil War, first brought his family to California in 1875, after a successful ten-year period of building railroads in the Midwest. The family set up headquarters in Los Angeles while Monroe was building railroads throughout the state for the Southern Pacific Railroad.
From 1879 to 1882, Monroe served on the Los Angeles City Council, meeting other leaders who would several years later play an important role in Monrovia’s history. After moving to Texas in 1882, where Monroe was involved in other construction activities, they returned to California in 1884 and began their search for a permanent home site.
The Monroes visited the San Gabriel Valley, where they met E.J. “Lucky” Baldwin who had just subdivided the eastern portion of his vast Rancho Santa Anita into thirty acre parcels. With Baldwin as their guide, the Monroes explored the area and was impressed by the lovely locale and purchased the land in what is now Monrovia.
By the end of 1885, three of Monroe’s friends, Judge J.D. Bicknell, J.F. Crank, and E.F. Spence, had also purchased acreage from Baldwin. A year later, these men, together with Monroe and J.F. Falvey, the foreman of Baldwin’s ranch, decided to establish a town on their combined holdings.
In honor of W. N. Monroe, they decided that the new town was to be named “Monrovia”. Two engineers laid out a sixty-acre town site with streets named for trees, flowers, and ladies.
On May 17, 1886, when lots were first offered for sale, Monrovia, “Gem City of the Foothills”, was born.
Monrovia has grown from a sparse community of orange ranches to a residential community and has been used extensively as locations for filming many TV shows, movies and commercials.
In 1995 Monrovia received the All America City Award from the National Civic League.

The economic outlook for Monrovia remains positive due to the remarkable diversity and balance of its businesses base. Monrovia’s businesses serve local, regional, national and international customers. The city has successfully maintained a reputation as a regional business center and remains one of the least expensive communities in the Los Angeles area in which to do business.
Monrovia is now the home of a Verizon Smartpark self-healing fiber-optic ring that links the high-tech corridor and downtown businesses to a high-speed data transmission network, making it the “best wired” community in Southern California.
